Abstract

This research examines the important role of Malaysia's culinary heritage in driving tourism and fostering economic development, with a particular focus on governmental interventions in this domain. The study examines the impact of the culinary heritage on effective marketing strategies and their profound implications for long-term economic growth, using the incorporation of culinary heritage into tourism as a lens. Drawing upon a comprehensive analysis of relevant academic literature and secondary data sources, including studies that explore the utilisation of culinary heritage in the strategic promotion of Malaysian gastrodiplomacy and the perceptions of tourists towards Malaysian gastronomic products, this paper presents a holistic understanding of the intricate relationship between Malaysia's culinary heritage and its tourism landscape. Aligned to leverage culinary heritage for economic progress and tourism industry development, the research addresses the government's emphasis on exploring culinary heritage. The government plays an important role in promoting Malaysian cuisine, positioning the “gastronomy paradise," and enhancing the visitor experience. However, heightened concerns about exploring the impact of Malaysia's culinary heritage arise due to existing challenges in promotional efforts, potentially acting as impediments to collaborative initiatives. Employing a comprehensive research strategy integrating a qualitative approach from previous studies and triangulation in the future as a suggestion, the study found the government's responsibilities and their impact on the seamless integration of culinary heritage in the tourism industry. Tailored for policymakers, government entities, and tourism stakeholders, the findings contribute to knowledge on tourist and local gastronomy dynamics and recommend a framework in future research for sustainable and culturally enriched tourism in Malaysia. This paper concludes with strategic recommendations to strengthen the synergies between Malaysia's rich culinary traditions and tourism sector, ultimately fostering sustainable economic growth and global recognition. Anticipated results are poised to significantly contribute to the existing body of knowledge on tourism and the intricate dynamics of local gastronomy in the Malaysian context.
