Abstract

As part of a country in the South American region, Suriname has approximately 15% of the population of Javanese ethnicity; they come from communities that experienced part of the migration process during the Dutch colonial period. They are still trying to find a cultural identity from Java in Indonesia, including making traditional art. However, the materials used to make conventional works of art are quite different from those in Indonesia. Transferring material knowledge and skills used to create traditional works of art is very important for ethnic Javanese people.
