Librarian’s Conscience Framework: Securing quality in AI-supported academic library work

Abstract

AI-supported academic library work now shapes reference support, metadata creation, discovery pathways, chatbot interaction, generated summaries, and research assistance. This conceptual paper develops the Librarian’s Conscience Framework to explain the human accountability route that secures quality before automated output enters service. The framework comprises five conscience actions: output verification, privacy judgement, fairness assessment, metadata responsibility, and accountable mediation. These actions convert AI outputs into reliable information, protected inquiry, fair access, accurate metadata, and defensible service decisions. Librarian conscience anchors institutional trust and quality human-AI learning environments.
