Urban quality of life is increasingly governed by not only the physical features of the built environment but also the way we view and experience the city via digital media. The rapid expansion of social media has changed the face of environmental aesthetics by inspiring us to create and distribute visually appealing environments for online engagement. While there are studies on the impact of social media-driven aesthetics on tourism, marketing, and brand placement, they have only recently been studied in the context of environmental aesthetics and urban quality of life. This paper aims to shed light on how social media-based aesthetics can alter environmental aesthetics and urban quality of life. It aims to determine how social media affects aesthetic perception, the relationship between online and offline spatial experience, and human health, and to build an understanding of the relationship between social media-based aesthetics and environmental aesthetics, as well as urban quality of life. The study utilizes theory-building research design by working with interdisciplinary literature from architecture, urban design, environmental psychology, digital media studies and quality-of-life research. No empirical data or human participants were included, as the research framework is based on published scholarly sources. The synthesis concludes that social media-driven aesthetics have an impact on urban quality of life through aesthetic perception, spatial engagement, emotional attachment and social inclusivity. The findings suggest that social media can shape aesthetic preferences, spatial expectations, and how people view and evaluate cities. A visually attractive place can enhance place identity, social engagement, and positive emotions, but if the design is purely image-based, it will commodify public space and place the emphasis on visual features over inclusiveness and long-term environmental quality. As a conceptual study, the proposed framework has not yet been empirically tested, but it is suitable as a theoretical basis for future empirical work. The framework brings environmental aesthetics into the digital age and provides conceptual ideas for architects, urban designers, and policymakers to design and implement urban environments that incorporate digital visibility while remaining meaningful to human experience and sustainable in the long term.
