Abstract

Suzhou's picturesque scenery has inspired many renowned artists to create numerous artworks themed around the city. For example, Fang Junbi (1898-1986) created "Tiger Hill Pagoda in Suzhou" in the 1940s, and Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010) crafted "Suzhou Gardens" in the 1970s. These works showcase the unique landscapes of Suzhou and reflect the artists' deep affection for the city and their artistic perspectives. This study aims to analyze Suzhou-themed landscape oil paintings through the environmental factors in Hippolyte Adolphe Taine's (1828-1893) Philosophy of Art (1873), summarizing the characteristics of Suzhou's environment and further highlighting the importance of Suzhou-themed landscape paintings.
